@Hiroshi Not sure about that. I think there was quite a bit of understanding regarding nuclear reactions then. I believe the original experiment was about trying to get a reaction using Deuterium using electric potential as the driving force instead of heat. I think the issue arose because other experimenters could not replicate the heat effect nor did they detect neutrons (Which should be emitted from reactions involving Deuterium). However, if the original heat effect as so claimed was not from a Deuterium reaction but rather from something else due to impurities in the palladium then that would be of great interest. Correct me if I am wrong.

@Robert Greenyer Do you think it is fair to say that the 1989 discovery was decades ahead of its time and literally COULD NOT be understood at the time because the prerequisite science and technology simply was not there? The leap required would be too great? Anyway, congratulations ! Apart from the obviously important data to be gained from it, this experiment seems like a great way for the project to develop contacts and increase visibility which is a Good Thing(tm) for us all. :-)

We are living marvellous times! I think the samples must be used for tests that weren't done before: Crystallography , chemical composition (impurities), Isotope composition, SEM to see cracks which could be storms' NAE. A sample could be used to redo the Fleishman and Pons initial cell. That's a lot of works. If results are positives, it will show to the world that F&P had something real. Keep on the good work!
