I suspect for example that even just having the initial powder mix react at high temperature, forming new compounds and alloy phases would affect the end results, even without involving possible nuclear reactions.
@Robert Greenyer Unfortunately the file is in a proprietary binary format. I don't know what kind of progam would be used to open it. This being said, as far as I understand from recent reading, one has to take in mind that ToF-SIMS spectra could be showing molecular ions too, so all possible compounds and compound fragments from the initial elements must be thought of as well during analysis. Some reading: http://www.chemguide.co.uk/analysis/masspec/fragment.html http://www.chemguide.co.uk/analysis/masspec/mplus.html For example, could the peaks at masses 39-41 be due to various combinations of 27Al and 6Li or 7Li (Li2Al)? I am not sure, to be honest. However, by knowing more in detail what elements and possible contaminants were included in the powder, the operator who made the report might be able to tell. EDIT: here's possibly another newbie question on my part. 61Ni has an isotopic mass of 60.931, which seems to correspond more to the peak of the left of the green area rather than the green area itself, in the graph below. So, could the green area be showing something else than Ni? http://i.imgur.com/MXRlaVP.png
