@harry v: I would imagine that hydrogen would engage in LENR interactions mainly with the nickel nanostructures on the surface, formed through proprietary treatment, not the bulk of the wires which is a pure constantan alloy. Wouldn't the Debye temperature of said nanostructures be that of plain nickel? The fact that resistance anomalies on fresh Celani wires start at around that temperature (usually somewhat lower) as reported by MFMP, seems to be consistent with this hypothesis.

MFMP team is using constantan which is an alloy of copper and nickel so its Debye temperature may be considerably lower. googling "Debye temperature of constantan" produces a link to a journal article behind a pay wall. :-(

You have a point but I'm not 100% convinced. With the nano structures amplification effect explanation, systematic errors can too easily be misinterpreted as excess heat. EDIT: to clarify, I would consider acceptable some wiggle room for the activation temperature/tem perature range, but if excess heat apparently starts showing as soon as power is applied, even at a very low level, that would be a strong indication of measurement artifacts/syste matic errors possibly occurring. If it were possible to activate/deacti vate at will (non-destructiv ely) the effect in a pure mass flow calorimetry system like DGT did during yesterday's demo (for example by carefully vacuuming out hydrogen and filling the cell with argon before applying power again. Then do the opposite), that would be ideal, as most doubts and issues would be cleared. This being said, in my opinion if would be a positive sign if a threshold temperature for excess heat was clearly observed.

@MFMP: knots in the wire? Are you sure it's not the one pictured below*** the kind of flow needed by thermal gradient? From what I understand the entire chamber has to participate in this, not only the active material. This is needed to keep the hydrogen (monoatomic, preferably) moving. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/36/Convection_casserole.png/250px-Convection_casserole.png If the chamber is very long and thin (like with the LENR stick) I believe it will be harder to maintain such a flow with the hydrogen gas, as suggested by DGT, just with a temperature gradient in the active material. However I haven't performed any calculation or simulation to verify this (not that I would be able to, reliably. Somebody please help). *** Or this?? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/27/Oceanic_spreading.svg/220px-Oceanic_spreading.svg.png

The Debye temperature for Nickel is about 179°C, so that's not something hard to achieve. It has to be at least that hot. No reaction takes place below this temperature, apparently On Page 11 here you can see a diagram of their reactor. http://iccf18.research.missouri.edu/files/day2/Protocol_and_test_results.pdf The reported Internal temperature (Thermocouple In) wasn't very high, about 350-400°C. Too high might be counterproducti ve. The thermocouples on the flanges on both end of the reactor assembly reported about 250°C and 180°C for the thermal gradient required for the gas flow. The one reporting the highest temperature kept slowly increasing throughout the experiment. I suspect some sort of control is achieved by controlling this temperature difference too. Internal pressure wasn't very high either. They started with 2.2 bar which increased to about 4.8 bar with temperature. Afterwards, it was either leaking or got deliberately purged at a slow rate. The high voltage (>100kV) spark control to produce a plasma/atomic hydrogen inside the reactor chamber is probably fundamental too for this to work. By the way, the fact that there has to be a temperature gradient for the hydrogen to flow indicates that maybe using free powders isn't the best idea. Nickel particles/nanos tructures should preferably be on a substrate (Celani wires are a sort of substrate too). This also implies that the reactor chamber should preferably be elongated, not spherical/unifo rm in size. However too much elongated might disrupt the flow (so maybe the LENR stick might not have an optimal geometry). Maybe someone can do some computer simulations to check what would be the ideal diameter/height ratio for a tube reactor chamber? The DGT reactor schematic in the pdf above shows a width/diameter ratio of about 2. I suspect this is important information too.
